Swamp Cooler vs. Central Air Conditioning in Utah's Dry Climate

That cooled, moist air gets blown into the house, usually through a large ceiling vent or a duct system, while windows stay cracked open to let air push back out.

Central air conditioning works completely differently. It uses refrigerant to pull heat out of your indoor air and dump it outside, then recirculates the same air through your ducts. Your house stays sealed up, and the system also removes some humidity along the way. It doesn't care what the outdoor conditions are — it will keep cooling even on a muggy monsoon afternoon in August.

That difference in physics is the whole story here. Swamp coolers depend on dry air. Utah's typical summer humidity (often 15–30%) is exactly why they've been popular along the Wasatch Front for decades.

Upfront and operating costs

This is usually where swamp coolers win people over.

Swamp coolers do great in June and early July when the air is bone-dry. But Utah's late-summer monsoon season — usually mid-July through August — brings spikes of humidity. When the outdoor humidity climbs, a swamp cooler loses its punch fast.
