Get Your Furnace Ready for a Utah Winter: A Pre-Season Checklist

Utah winters are long and cold, and your furnace is about to run hard from November through March. The worst time to discover it won't start is the first freezing night — when every HVAC company in the valley is slammed with the same emergency calls. A little prep now saves you that. Here's the checklist.

Why pre-season matters here

Along the Wasatch Front, breakdowns cluster on the first hard cold snap: a furnace that limped through last winter finally quits, and so does everyone else's. Getting ahead of it means you're not waiting in a two-day queue for heat with a house full of kids. Fall is the time.

The homeowner checklist

• Replace the filter. The single cheapest thing you can do — a clean filter protects airflow all season. (See how often to change it.)
• Run the heat now, before you need it. Turn the thermostat up on a cool morning and confirm it fires, blows warm, and shuts off normally. Finding a problem in October beats finding it in January.
• Clear the vents and returns. Open supply registers, and keep furniture and rugs off the cold-air returns so the furnace can breathe.
• Check the thermostat. Fresh batteries, correct settings — and if you've been meaning to add a programmable or smart thermostat, now's the time.
• Test your carbon-monoxide detectors. This is the non-negotiable one. Gas heat means CO risk; working detectors on every level are your safety net. Replace batteries and any unit over 5–7 years old.
• Clear the space around the furnace. Boxes and stored items against the unit are a fire and airflow hazard.
• Notice the first run. A brief burning-dust smell when heat first kicks on for the season is normal. A persistent burning or exhaust smell is not — shut it down and call.
